Natural vitamins and mineral supplements.

Most people assume that if they eat a reasonably healthy diet, they eat well enough to avoid taking vitamins or herbal supplements. But the fact is with our busy lifestyles, most people don’t eat well at all!

While many may eat enough fish, meat and poultry, there is generally a need to eat more bread and cereals, and fruit and vegetables. Many of us have far too many takeaways for our own good. Not only do unhealthy or inadequate foods add unwanted fats and sugars to our diet, but often lead to less than the required intake of vitamins and minerals.

Vegetarians as a group are healthier than meat eaters, but may still be deficient in some vitamins such as calcium, iron and vitamin B12.

As well there is some evidence to show that the environmental factors which we now live under, contribute to a number of damaging actions inside the body at cellular level. Chemical pollutants and motor vehicle emissions are known to destroy body tissue, and deplete the body of nutrients.

Supplements can never compensate for poor diet, or for personal habits that are known contribute to ill health. Smoking just one cigarette can destroy the vitamin C equivalent to that contained in one orange!

There has been a massive surge of interest in recent years in alternate and complimentary medicine. Complimentary medicine is a recent development where conventional medicine and alternative medicine work in conjunction with each other. Complimentary health care is growing rapidly in stature and acceptance, and is now being taught at many Universities.

Generally, the conventional medicine is used to combat disease or sickness, and herbal and vitamin supplements and natural herbal remedies are used to strengthen the immune system and soothe symptoms. Alternative medicine takes a more holistic, or whole of body approach. The two disciplines compliment each other.

No supplements have yet been found to cure serious disease. However there is a considerable body of evidence to show that taking a high quality supplement can avert serious disease, and can help significantly with the aging process.

If you are not eating fresh vegetables every day then you probably need a vitamin supplement. Your body cannot store vitamins and nutrients, you should eat fresh fruit and vegetables every day. It has been estimated that more than 50% of Australians and Americans take extra herbal vitamins and supplements.

All natural vitamins are organic food substances, found only in living things, that is, plants and animals. With a handful of exceptions, the body cannot manufacture or synthesise vitamins. They must be supplied in the diet or in dietary supplements. Vitamins are essential to the normal functioning of our bodies.

Vitamins and medicinal herbs do not replace food. They cannot. In fact, vitamins cannot be assimilated without ingesting food. That is why you should take them with food. Vitamins help regulate metabolism, help convert fat and carbohydrates into energy, and assist in forming bone and tissue.

Many of us already take a regular vitamin or mineral supplement, and wouldn’t dream of not doing so. Whether it’s a herbal tea, or a supplement pill, we take it because we believe our body needs it, and it’s good for us. Personally, I drink gallons of herbal and green tea, just because I like it, and because it’s good for me. Depending on whom you ask, it doesn’t seem to have done me any harm!
