Old age is generally a time when people expect to take it easy,
to enjoy being with the grandchildren, play a bit of golf, or go fishing! The reality is however that most elderly people are not well. Poor diet, and a lifetime of onerous working conditions, or exposure to chemical pollutants, often leave a legacy of poor health as we grow older.
More and more aged persons are seeking herbal help, as the public health system winds down, more and more of us are looking at health maintenance, or preventative health care, rather than waiting till we get sick, and then finding there is nowhere to go, the hospitals are full.
There are several herbs that are useful in slowing the effects of anti-aging. Recent research has shown that 3 such herbs, ginko, Crataegus oxyacantha, (hawthorn)and Centella asiatica, (Gotu Kola) can assist in the treatment of heart disease, vascular disease, and help with Alzheimers and dementia.
All of these plants have been used in traditional herbal medicine for hundreds of years. There are many mineral and vitamin supplements available to help ward off the diseases that may strike aged people down.
Dr Rob McCaleb, Director of the prestigous Herb Research Foundation says that
“Life extension is not so mysterious as finding secret longevity pills. By and large it involves identifying the major predictable causes of death, and reducing the risk that you will fall prey to them. Major causes of death are heart disease and cancer. The third-excluding accidents- is pneumonia and influenza, but this is often known as euphemism for ‘dying of old age'.

People who live to an advanced age frequently die of pneumonia developing as a complication during bouts with influenza or cold viruses, which leave their defences weakened. Liver disease is fourth, followed by diabetes. Herbs and other dietary supplements can help us avoid succumbing to these diseases, or at least lesson or delay them.”
Reducing the identifiable risks can be achieved with many safe, effective herbal remedies.
