We often say it with flowers, but what do we really mean?

There are flowers you can eat, you can smell, for special purposes such as medicines, teas, and herbal infusions, and those grown specifically to feed wildlife.

Some are exquisitely perfumed, and some naturally smell bad to attract flies for food. Some flower at night, and provide food for flying foxes and bats. The bats pollinate the plants and trees at the same time.

Some people like to have formal flower gardens, planted for neatness and for color contrast. Others plant flowers in everywhere, even amongst the vegetables. Many flowers such as marigolds and tansy, keep pest bugs away from the vegetables.

We haven’t put very many graphics on our web page, because we wanted the page to download quickly when being viewed. But, who can resist flowers? Let's make an exception here!

Some flowers are edible!* Borage flowers are used for a diuretic, and in drinks, chives flowers are chopped and used in dishes; daylily flowers in salads and soups, lavender in cakes, nasturtium in salads, rosemary in soups, stews and sorbets, garlic in salads, tulips used as mousse dishes, violets in salads, zucchini, flour and sauté in oil, artichokes, banana, boil and add to curries, chrysanthemums, add to stirfries; add thyme flowers to soups and stews.

Some flowers are used for garnish. These include rocket, basil, begonia petals, borage, calendula petals, citrus, geraniums, hibiscus, lavender, nasturtium, passionflowers, candied rose petals, sage, cornflower, guava, fuchsia, English daisy, wattle, and honeysuckle.

When picking flowers for food, pick them early in the morning or last thing at night. Keep them in the fridge in a bowl of water. Another thing to remember, is that, just as you should plant by the moon phases, so should you pick. This is especially important when the flowers are to be used for herbal remedies.

If the infusion is to be used to get rid of something, say acne, or fix a medical problem, always pick on a waning moon. That is, when the moon is decreasing. If the flowers are to be used for an infusion to improve something, say to lose weight, or increase libido, always pick on a waxing moon, when the moon is becoming full..

*Medicinal flowers* This is a very complex subject, there are many hundreds of these. In the herb section on this web page, we show you where to get more detailed information.

We also express our feelings for our friends and families with them. We have Graduation flowers, and we give them for Mothers Day, Easter, bereavments, get well, birthdays, and baby flowers. We have flowers for every occasion, it's in our culture, and in our heritage.
