Chillies are the fruit of a plant

that belongs to the capsicum family.

Some of them are;

Poblano. Mild dark green chilli about 10 cm long, with thick flesh, and asubtle smoky flavor.

Japaleno. Rich flavored, smooth thichk fleshed chilli, about 6 cm long. Can be red, yellow, green and are often canned or pickled.


Serrano. Small thin moderate to hot chilli with a rich flavor. Not as bitter as japelino.

Habanero. Pretty lantern shaped chilli that is amongst the hottest in the world. Can be green or orange, but mostly red.

Thai. Long thin pointed chilli with a lingering heat, in red or green varieties.

Birds eye. Small very hot chilli that can be red or green.

Banana. Large red green or yellow chili very mild on the heat scale.

Inferno. A thin yellowish chili, as the name suggests, it is very hot

Inca Gold. Very hot, gold colored with a very fruity flavor.

Hungarian. Small round red or green chili with medium heat and a slightly sweet taste.

Chillies are now one of the most widely used seasonings in the world. Chillies also play a role in herbal medicine. They are very high in vitamin c, having at least twice the amount of citrus fruits.

They are also a good source of beta-carotene, a prominent antioxidant.

High in dietary fibre, and minerals, potassium, and B group vitamins. Chillies contain no fat, and very little energy, (calories) so do not contribute to weight gain.

Chillies contain a pungent oil called capsaicin that has very high medicinal value.
