Wow! Look what one enterprising artist has done with garden weeds!
*Wild Baskets*
are made by Richard & Judy Wolski. Richard is the “Hunter Gatherer” and Judy is the weaver. Judy has been involved in craft making for many years, using normally discarded materials, and recycling what she can. They say “the thrill of making something from a product, which would usually be thrown away, is both satisfying and exciting”.

The large basket above is called "GNARLY"
They have both been heavily involved in conservation for many years. In particular with education in recycling and waste reduction, wildlife protection and remnant vegetation study and mapping.
Their passion for the protection of our native bush and its inhabitants led them to want to rid the bush of introduced and exotic species which were playing havoc on native plants. They decided to use these plants which are choking our native bush for their weaving.

The basket on the left above and below is called "LYRE BIRD"
The one on the right is called "NEST EGG"
Judy says “the lovely thing about using exotics for our craft is that we are helping to improve our bush environment and people are always happy to welcome us to their property to gather our materials.
There will always (unfortunately) be an abundance of supplies for our craft”! They also use dead leaves, seeds, pods and prunings for their baskets.

The baskets start out with the frame and handle woven from vines, and then allowed to dry.

After the woven frames are dry, they are woven with other vines and leaves toproduce the finished basket.

Land clearing sites are also a source of supply, and you will often see Richard climbing through a forest gathering materials, and giving new life to native vegetation which would otherwise be smothered by these exotic plants.
Unfortunately quarantine reglations prohibit them from being exported overseas, but they can be shipped at a reasonable cost within Australia.
The baskets sell readily, and new ones will be featured when these have been sold. These baskets are for sale, and are on display at an art gallery in Queensland.
